The Future of Fieldsports

16th August 2023

Richard and I have thoughts and principles which we apply to our lifestyle (don’t worry, we’re not interested in imposing them onto others). One of them is that we try to have some involvement with the food that we consume, particularly the meat and fish side of things. We want to know where it came from and either how it lived or how it died. Essentially it’s about being sure that the animal had a good life and humane death, the latter is where our shooting comes in and our involvement in that community.

The Interview

This year at the annual Game Fair we managed to meet up with some of our friends and talk about all things shooting, fishing,  wild food and countryside management. Richard had lined up a few meetings, and was asked by Richard Negus if he would share some of his thoughts about the future of shooting in the UK for a  feature in the Shooting Times and on the Shooting Show

It’s an incredibly interesting and important topic, and the thoughts across the board from those who Richard Negus spoke to appears to be the same – the future for shooting could be very bright indeed, but we need to continue to make positive headway. I feel that Richard Negus’ final paragraph sums it up well:

“My take-home view as I left the Game Fair was that our sport does have a future, a strong future at that. The reasoned voices I spoke with fully understood our failings and had a method of addressing these ills. We clearly have a superb story to tell to a wider audience, yet we fail to do that cohesively or concisely. Perhaps it is time to stop firefighting and go on the attack? I recommend Louisa, Amber and Jodie lead the assault.”
