56: Wet Cold vs Dry Cold
There are many elements which affect how cold you feel and how cold you actually are at the core, in this episode Richard talks about the subtle external factors which can have a big impact on our bodies in lower…
Modern Outdoor Survival was started back in June 2021, and was born from Richard’s experiences over 15 years, working as an instructor with groups in the mountains, forests and remote areas of Europe and further afield. The concept was for a podcast which could be an information resource and community.
The purpose of this show is to share realistic and relevant outdoor safety with a global audience. Survival is about good planning, good training and good decisions – it is not about flashy gear or weird, esoteric skills.
The overall aim of the show is simple – to promote discussion and thought about what are useful, relevant and essential outdoor safety and survival skills in the current day.
With each of the regular episodes of Modern Outdoor Survival we will talk about one particular topic – shelter options, navigation, cutting tools, decision making and so on. The discussion on these topics will be within the context of modern equipment and availability of knowledge, with a global audience in mind.
Primitive survival has its place, but if you whip out the loincloth and the flint blades at the first sign of trouble then you have probably missed some steps along the way. Likewise bushcraft and traditional wilderness skills – but practitioners of those skills would have to admit that leather, wool and wood are heavier than GoreTex, hydrophobic down and titanium.
We will also try to make sure that the content is appropriate for a wider audience, with no strong profanity or politicial discussion. There will of course be some topics that may not be suitable for all ages and sensibilities – we cannot adequately cover all outdoor safety and survival topics without diving into medical, biological or other subjects.
