Outdoor Skills Qualified for the Woods, Unready for the Wild? UK Bushcraft Qualifications Under Scrutiny 22nd April 2025 There’s never been a better time to learn outdoor skills. Across the UK, interest in bushcraft has surged—fueled by everything from TV survival shows to a growing desire for deeper connection with the natural world. Alongside this, the number of people seeking to teach those skills has grown, too. Bushcraft, in its many forms, has become a legitimate path for career changers, educators, and outdoor professionals alike. But as demand rises, so does the need to ask some hard questions: what qualifies someone to lead a group in the outdoors? And are the current training routes fit for purpose when it comes to safety, leadership, and responsibility? The Rise of Bushcraft Certificates – and Their Limits In Britain’s booming bushcraft scene, a flurry of training courses and certificates has emerged in recent years. From weekend bushcraft basics to year-long “instructor” programs, there’s no shortage of qualifications on offer. Many of these—such as those accredited by NCFE or other bodies—deliver impressive technical content: fire-lighting methods, shelter building, foraging and tool use, all usually taught in the comfort of a fixed woodland camp. The emphasis, however, is squarely on skills – safe axe technique, natural cordage, identifying wild plants, primitive cooking and so on – rather than on field leadership. In some cases, courses explicitly avoid assessing teaching or leadership ability. The result is a generation of bushcraft certificate-holders who may know how to carve a spoon or start a fire by friction, but have never had to navigate a group through a mountainside storm or manage an emergency in a trackless bog.This focus on static, camp-based competence reflects a common assumption in the community: that bushcraft is inherently low-risk. Many bushcraft courses take place in controlled woodland environments where hazards rarely extend beyond cuts, burns or the occasional rain shower. Unlike climbing or paddlesports, where industry standards and formal supervision are often mandatory, bushcraft in the UK remains something of a qualification Wild West. Anyone can call themselves a “bushcraft instructor”, and many do – after perhaps just a single course or two.An additional complication is the way in which the Forest School Leader qualification has come to be viewed, in some circles, as a de facto bushcraft qualification. While the Forest School movement provides a valuable, structured approach to outdoor education for children—emphasising play, connection to nature, and developmental outcomes—its leadership framework is designed for work in controlled environments, with a focus on pedagogy rather than survival or remote skills.Yet increasingly, those holding the Forest School Leader award are advertising themselves as bushcraft instructors, often without additional training or experience in wilderness leadership. This blurring of boundaries adds to the confusion in the public mind: is someone who is solely qualified as a Forest School leader of appropriate skill or expertise to take a group into the backcountry or sidecountry for a multi-day survival course? Almost certainly not—but the distinctions are rarely explained. Technical Masters, But No Trail Leaders Effective bushcraft instruction, especially outside a cosy camp, demands robust group management and real outdoor leadership. The most crucial bushcraft skill, in many cases, is not bow-drilling a fire but safely managing a group in dynamic outdoor environments. That means navigation, risk assessment, first aid, decision-making under pressure – classic leadership competencies that many bushcraft-specific certificates barely touch on. Knowing how to teach knife skills or identify edible plants is valuable, but it is not the same as leading a group through exposed terrain in poor weather, handling emergencies, or making real-time safety calls. Some courses acknowledge this limitation and encourage further learning, but others create the illusion that a certificate alone confers competence to lead. The result is a mismatch between qualification and real-world readiness, especially when instructors begin operating outside of the woodland classroom. Mountain Leader: The Baseline for Leadership? If there is one qualification that exemplifies the kind of leadership bushcraft lacks, it’s the Mountain Leader (ML) award. Administered by Mountain Training UK, the ML predates all of the current bushcraft qualifications by decades. It was created to provide a structured, nationally recognised framework for training and assessing those who lead groups in the UK's upland and mountainous terrain—arguably our own version of 'wilderness'. The UK's most remote and undeveloped landscapes are not vast forests or arid plains, but rather rolling uplands, rugged moorland, and steep-sided mountains where weather, visibility and access all conspire to raise the stakes. The Mountain Leader award was designed specifically for this reality: to equip instructors not just with navigational and environmental knowledge, but with a working understanding of group dynamics, safety systems, and outdoor decision-making in these exposed settings. The key distinction is that ML is a leadership award. It is not about proving technical brilliance, but about managing people and risk in dynamic environments. Risk management is embedded throughout the syllabus: candidates are expected to assess terrain, weather and group condition continuously, make decisions based on safety, and lead with clear structure and confidence. These are not abstract skills—they are directly transferable to any environment where people are under your care, whether that’s a moorland plateau or a dense woodland miles from the nearest road. The training and assessment for ML equip instructors to be safe, effective and adaptable across multiple outdoor settings. Many of the most experienced bushcraft instructors quietly bolster their credentials with ML, Lowland Leader, or similar awards. These frameworks reflect decades of best practice in outdoor instruction, and they embed the idea that being responsible for others in wild spaces is a serious undertaking. A Qualification Is Only the Beginning No qualification, however robust, can instantly produce a competent instructor. It is experience that refines judgement, builds teaching skill, and deepens understanding of group dynamics. This is as true in bushcraft as it is in any outdoor discipline. The Mountain Training schemes acknowledge this by building experience requirements into their qualifications. But many bushcraft qualifications do not. A newly-qualified instructor may have spent just a few days learning in a static environment, with little or no experience of real-world group leadership. Without a culture of mentorship or clear pathways for post-qualification development, it is easy for gaps in competence to go unrecognised. In other industries, there are safeguards. Scuba instructors, for example, must log many dives and prove experience before teaching. Outdoor educators in New Zealand must pass rigorous assessment to lead multi-day bush trips. These models reflect the reality that instructing others in dynamic environments demands more than technical skill – it requires time-served, field-tested leadership. For example, see the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association (NZOIA) and their structured Bush Leader qualifications. Bushcraft’s Identity Crisis: Hobby or Hardcore? Much of the confusion stems from bushcraft’s overlapping identities. In some contexts it is a recreational activity – a way to connect with nature, build confidence, or enjoy time in the woods. In others, it forms part of serious training for expedition safety, survival or field operations. This split leads to uncertainty over what qualifications are needed, and for whom. A Forest School leader might be well equipped to deliver nature-based play and bushcraft skills to children in a local woodland. But that does not mean they are qualified to lead adults into remote hills for a weekend survival course. Conversely, a military veteran might have the fieldcraft experience but lack the teaching skills or safety systems needed for working with civilians under a commercial business structure. Until the industry recognises and reconciles these different approaches, confusion will persist. Some will treat bushcraft as a branch of outdoor leadership and seek qualifications accordingly. Others will see it as a craft or hobby, with informal knowledge passed down between peers. Neither perspective is inherently wrong – but problems arise when the boundaries are not clear, particularly in commercial or high-risk contexts. Toward a Smarter Future Bushcraft in the UK is growing, and with that growth comes greater responsibility. Clients and students deserve instructors who can not only demonstrate technical skills, but who can also manage risk, read the environment, and make sound decisions under pressure.We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. The models already exist: Mountain Training, NZOIA, and others provide examples of how to blend technical ability with leadership training and experience requirements. A future bushcraft leadership award could follow suit, combining woodland skills with rigorous standards for navigation, group safety and dynamic instruction.In the meantime, prospective instructors should consider supplementing their bushcraft qualifications with leadership and safety training. For many, the best first step may not be a bushcraft-specific course at all—but something like the Mountain Leader award, which provides a solid foundation in navigation, group management and risk mitigation.
