FABRIC

:: layering systems to stay safe and synthetic vs natural fibres ::

2nd August 2021

How do clothing layering systems work, are synthetic or natural fabrics more suited to your planned activity and what is the deal with waterproof vs breathable .

There is an age old argument about how to remain safe in the outdoors related to clothing choice. Layers are still the accepted way of ensuring that you can keep your body running at optimum temperature without having to put too much energy into thermoregulation. Starting off an activity feeling just a little bit cold is the ideal, as you move you generate heat, and if you have played it right this heat will be enough to get your body to a comfortable temperature. Spare layers enable you to maintain that temperature if you stop for breaks, to take photos or prepare for the next stretch.

Another contentious topic is whether to wear synthetic or natural fabrics. Each has their place, especially in temperate climates where the weather fluctuates throughout the year. We go into details about which situations may lead you to wearing what type of clothing and also cover whether waterproofing or breathability is more important.
