Comprehensive GPS/GNSS training for groups, teams and individuals as part of a structured training programme.

Course Content

The GPS Use (L1) Course from Original Outdoors is designed to give users a comprehensive understanding of the the use of GPS and other GNSS devices.

Subjects covered in classroom and exercise sessions:

  • Understanding of current GPS/GNSS systems (including GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou)
  • Position Formats, Latitude/Longitude and working with mapping
  • Deployment of GPS devices for teams and individuals
  • Routes, tracklogs and waypoints
  • Using GPS for bespoke mapping, incident response and area planning/management
  • Integration with GIS and computer mapping systems
  • Realistic use of handheld GPS receivers
  • Limitations of GPS and planning for equipment failure

This GPS training course is delivered by experienced and qualified instructors with military, emergency services or expedition backgrounds.

Course Delivery

The GPS Use (L1) Course is delivered as a two-day course for standalone training, or can be combined with other training as a bespoke course.
The course involves a combination of classroom and field training and can be delivered on-site if required.
The course can be delivered at a maximum 1:10 ratio.

This course is most often run directly for a client, either on site or at our location in North Wales. As a standalone course it takes two days to complete.

Course Prerequisites

This is a Level 1 EST Framework course where no previous subject experience is required.

Familiarity with maps and basic navigation skills are useful but not necessarily required.

A good level of general fitness is preferred due to the moderately active nature of parts of the course (walking with rucksack etc)

Equipment Required

It is preferred that delegates can provide their own GPS devices (1:3 device ratio maximum) as some of the content can be tailored to the devices that delegates will use after the course.
GPS devices can be hired at an additional cost.

General outdoor clothing is required for the outdoor sections of the course – we can send a course-specific equipment list on request, and full information will be sent out once a booking has been confirmed.
