UK Mountain Safety Course

Two-Day mountain skills and safety courses held in North Wales

£145.00 per person

This is our 2-day UK Mountain Safety course that requires no previous experience – but includes the same content that we deliver to our military, emergency service and business clients on our partner site

The aim of this course is to give participants the skills and confidence to head into the mountains of the UK and make good decisions to plan for a great trip to the hills – but also be prepared for what to do if things go wrong.

The course is delivered in a realistic environment and you will be learning with experienced instructors.

The full course content is detailed below, and covers the basics of dealing with potential hazards in the British mountains and the decisions you need to make in a survival situation. The UK Mountain Safety course is not a navigation training course, but does cover some aspects of mountain navigation.
If you are looking for a UK-specific navigation course then please take a look at our range of navigation training courses HERE.

The course starts at 9:00am on each and normally run through until about 4:00pm on each day.

Why should you choose Original Outdoors for a survival course?

Survival skills are a subject that are often misrepresented – and the term ‘survival course’ gets used to advertise everything from kids activity days to what is essentially just camping without showers…

Original Outdoors runs survival courses for clients of all types, from military and emergency services to companies and private groups . The dates listed here are for the limited number of public courses we run every year as part of the structured training of the EST Framework.

The Level One Mountain Survival course is the first rung on a progression of structured survival training courses that are not just an activity day on the edge of some parkland – these are real courses, run by experienced instructors from a variety of backgrounds. This is the same course as we deliver to clients from around the UK and overseas.

Do I need any prior experience?

As a Level 1 course on the EST Framework no previous experience is required, however please read the notes below about fitness.

How fit do I need to be?

You will need to be fit enough to be on your feet all day and to move over rough terrain (mountainous, boggy, some steep slopes) for two consecutive days. The aim of this course is to train you, not to test you too much or put you at unreasonable risk. The vast majority of fit adults will be able to complete this course with no problem – but if you have any questions please get in touch directly.

Is there an age limit on this course?

All participants must be a minimum of 16yrs of age at the beginning of the course, and anyone under the age of 18yrs must be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian.

What is the EST Framework?

The Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework was created by Original Outdoors to provide a structured training pathway for organisations, groups and individuals who work and visit remote places and hazardous outdoor environments. The L1 Mountain Survival Course is part of this framework, and all participants on this course will be given the option to continue on this training stream – but if you just want to attend this course then that is absolutely fine.

Do I need to provide equipment?

Participants will need to provide their own outdoor equipment for the course (including waterproof clothing, rucksack, compass etc). We will also provide some specialist equipment. An equipment list is available upon request. We do not publicly list our equipment lists as they have a habit of being duplicated and ending up on other people’s websites.

Is accommodation provided?

We do not include accommodation, and this is a non-residential course. We are happy to recommend local accommodation providers that our previous clients have stayed with, and assist with any questions you may have about location, transport and so on.

What about food?

You will need to provide your own food for this course.

Can I purchase a gift voucher for this course?

Yes, you can purchase a gift voucher for somebody else by selecting the relevant option from the dropdown menu above. We can also create a custom PDF voucher that you can print off and give to the course recipient.
Terms and conditions for our Gift Vouchers can be found here.

Private Survival Courses

The Mountain Survival Course – a Level 1 EST Framework Course

The Mountain Survival course is a Level 1 Course on the EST Framework. This means that participants in this course can continue onwards in a progression of structured courses using the skills learned on this course – if they wish.

There is no requirement for any previous experience or training before attending this course however, and it can be undertaken purely as a standalone course.

The Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework

The Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework is a structured survival and outdoor safety training programme for individuals, groups, businesses and other organisations.

Origins of the Framework

Over the past decade Original Outdoors has worked with dozens of training partners to provide realistic subject and terrain-specific outdoor safety training. Throughout that time we had requests for the same key subjects again and again – navigation, use of outdoor PPE, emergency planning, survival techniques and logistics.
In 2017 we created the Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework after consulting with other outdoor professionals, educators and experts in outdoor safety training. From 2018 onwards the Environmental Survival Training Framework is offered to the general public as well as our existing clients.

Training Progression

The EST Framework is designed to allow candidates to complete standalone training sessions, or progress through a training pathway to become an advanced instructor in that subject.

Each of the courses are held within a training stream – navigation, survival, campcraft, wild food, search operations, work and industry. Each of those streams has courses at different training levels from Level One to Level Three, and then clearly defined training and assessment courses for becoming an EST instructor within that stream.

Training Delivery

All Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework courses are delivered by experienced outdoor professionals with backgrounds from the emergency services, SAR, expedition leadership or military service. Although the training is often delivered in a friendly and approachable manner there is always the underlying ethos that our training must be:

    • Appropriate
    • Realistic
    • Honest
    • Relevant

Our clients work in genuinely hazardous environments, and our training delivery has to match that. We choose our training venues, materials and partners carefully to ensure that we maintain a high quality of realistic, relevant and authentic survival and outdoor safety training.

EST Training Classification System

Original Outdoors created the Environmental Survival Training (EST) Training Classification System to categorise our own training courses, and provide a comparative system for other similar training schemes that sit alongside the EST Framework (Mountain Training, Rescue 3 etc).

Levels One, Two and Three are end-user awards within a particular training stream. Levels Four to Seven are instructor awards within that training stream.
