Foraging and Wild Food Course

One-Day Foraging and Wild Food courses held in North Wales

£65.00 per person

Original Outdoors runs foraging courses and wild food walks throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Each course follows a walk through fields, woodlands and along tracks, with a syllabus built around what is available in that season.

This course attracts clients from around the U.K. who are looking for an authentic foraging course, with instruction by professional foragers who are out looking for edible plants every week as part of their work with award-winning food businesses.

Our one-day foraging and wild food course takes place near the small rural town of Ruthin in Denbighshire, North Wales, and show what is available in various areas of fields, woodland and hedgerows.
We offer courses in Spring, Summer and Autumn to take advantage of the changing seasons and the varieties of foods and plants available at different times of year.

Most foraging courses consist of a short walk with an instructor just pointing out interesting plants. A day with Original Outdoors is different – almost straightaway you’ll be tasting foodstuffs and discovering new flavours. You’ll be shown how to prepare what you gather, and we can almost guarantee that you’ll able to find the same foods near your home when you get back!

The courses start at either 9:00am or 10:00am and last around four hours (see below)

COVID-19 UPDATE

Most of the remaining dates for 2020 can be booked as either a ‘MORNING’ or ‘AFTERNOON’ session. This is to allow for smaller group sizes and more separation between participants.

Course dates with ‘MORNING’ start at 9:00am and run until 1:00pm

Course dates with ‘AFTERNOON’ start at 2:00pm and run until 6:00pm

For course dates where we only have one session for the day the course will run from 10:00 until 2:00pm.

Course Content

  • An overview of the laws regarding access and what you can and cannot pick/gather
  • Examples of the main types of edible wild plants and fungi you can gather at different times of year, and where you are likely to find them
  • What is available is at that time of year
  • Preparation of the items you have gathered (and the consumption of!)
  • Fungi identification and safety
  • Recipe ideas and tips on cooking with wild food

For course dates with “MORNING” after the date the course will run from 09:00-13:00.

For course dates with “AFTERNOON” after the date the course will run from 14:00-18:00.

For course dates with no suffix the course will run from 10:00-14:00.

Course timings are to accommodate smaller group sizes and amended route in order to allow social distancing and other required precautions.

The Foraging and Wild Foods Course from Original Outdoors takes place in the Clwydian Range AONB just north of the beautiful market town of Ruthin. A mix of ancient woodland, pasture and ancient trackways is home to edible wild plants, trees and fungi.

Full joining instructions and meeting point will be sent out by email after you book a place on the course.

Richard Prideaux

The primary instructor for this course is Richard Prideaux, the lead instructor for Original Outdoors.

Richard has spent the majority of his adult life working in the great outdoors. He specialises in wilderness skills, foraging and teaching search operations to our professional clients at our sister site outdoorprofessional.co.uk, where you can read more about him and his experience.

Amongst other things he is a qualified mountain leader, spent several years as an active member of one of the North Wales mountain rescue teams and regularly appears on screen and in print talking about foraging, bushcraft and survival and other essential outdoor skills.

Richard lives near Ruthin in North Wales.

We sell gift vouchers for almost all of our public skills and experience courses. The vouchers are an e-voucher with a code, plus an A4 PDF that can be personalised with a short message for the person receiving it.

How it works

The process works like this:

  1. You can either choose a specific course date, or choose ‘Gift Voucher’ if you just want the recipient to choose a date for themselves
  2. Once you have chosen either a date or a voucher AND the number of places then click through to the checkout and fill in your payment information
  3. Your order will be processed and we will get in touch with you directly by email to ask if you want to add a message to the PDF
  4. We will send the PDF and the unique e-voucher code to you by email, along with another PDF that has instructions on how the person receiving the voucher can redeem it and claim their place
  5. You give the voucher to the person receiving it and they claim their place and pass their contact information to us so we can send them the rest of the course information

Is this course compliant with COVID-19 regulations and guidance?

This course takes place entirely outdoors and has been restructured for smaller group sizes and allowance for social distancing and other safety precautions. If you have any further questions please contact us directly and we will be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Do you forage for mushrooms and edible fungi?

Yes – but each course is focused on what is available in that area at that time. The availability of fungi (and particularly the edible species) is dependent on many conditions including temperature, humidity and even soil disturbance. We always talk in detail about mushroom foraging, but we cannot guarantee a good selection of edible species in the area on any given date.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes – but it will have to be on a lead at all times and be well behaved – please let us know if you are bringing one! 🙂 You are responsible for your own dog at all times.

Is there any cooking involved?

There is no cooking involved on this course, but we do run a dedicated Wild Food Weekend that covers many aspects of cooking with wild food in the outdoors.
