weekend bushcraft course uk north walesThe one phrase that is key to wilderness skills and bushcraft is “knowledge weighs nothing”. You can carry less by learning more and gaining experience.

The Original Outdoors Woodcrafter Course is a two-day bushcraft and wilderness skills course that takes place on forest sites surrounded by farmland, hedgerows and rivers. The site is just outside the North Wales town of Ruthin.
The course includes an overnight stay in a woodland shelter, cooking over an open fire, expert tuition in traditional bushcraft, wilderness skills and survival techniques and a wide range of other skills. The Woodcrafter was the original two-days wilderness skills and bushcraft course that we offered to the general public, and is still one of our most popular courses.

The first day of the Woodcrafter Course begins with firelighting using a variety of methods, then builds on this with a tutorial on different ways of cooking over an open fire. After lunch the course syllabus moves on to shelter building where students will work in groups to build shelters from natural materials. They have to be solid – they are going to be slept in that night! The second day focuses on more advanced skills such as making cordage from natural materials, camp furniture and basic first aid, as well as practicing and honing the skills learnt on the previous day. There is a lot to cover but we will revisit the basic techniques again and again throughout the two days.

There will also be workshops on foraging, purifying drinking water, using a knife and axe safely and sharpening them, tracking and making simple camp tools. Basic meals (rice/pasta and tinned foods) are provided, and there are simple and clean wilderness-camp style toilets on site.

This course requires no previous experience or for you to supply any specialist equipment, other than a sleeping bag and mat and basic outdoor clothing. The only other equipment you need to bring is good, solid footwear such as walking boots and suitable outdoor clothing, a sleeping bag and sleeping mat/bedroll. A full and comprehensive kit list will be emailed to you after your booking deposit has been received.

Basic food and drink is supplied for the duration of the course, which clients will need to supplement with their own food.

The Woodcrafter Course covers the following subjects:

  • Firelighting tuition using a variety of bushcraft methods
  • Building simple woodland shelters from natural materials
  • Use of tarps and tarpology (including bivvy bags)
  • Use of hammocks and ‘sleep systems’
  • Cooking over an open fire and making pot hangers etc
  • Some examples of wild foods and other foraged items
  • Finding safe drinking water
  • Choosing and using a bushcraft knife and axe safely (including sharpening)
  • Campcraft and camp organisation
  • Identification of useful plants
  • Making basic tools
  • Knots and useful cordage techniques
  • Packing a rucksack and equipment choice
Course Venue

The Woodcrafter Course is run in a private 90-acre woodland in North Wales, just outside the town of Ruthin in Denbighshire and on the edge of Clocaenog Forest. A mixture of coniferous and deciduous tree cover, plus a limestone gorge, river and access to clearings and meadows ensure that course participants feel that they get the very most out of their time with Original Outdoors. Full joining instructions, including kit list, meeting points and other information will be sent once bookings have been confirmed.

Course Timings

The Woodcrafter two day bushcraft course normally runs from a Saturday to a Sunday. The course is paced to balance learning opportunities with personal development time, and in order to make the most of our time in the forest the working days can be quite long. However, breaks and rest periods are built into each day:
Day 1 – Start at 10:00am, finish at 8:00pm
Day 2 – Start at 8:00am, finish at 3:00 – 4:00pm

Food and Accommodation

The course is conducted entirely outdoors in an expedition-style camp. We have a covered teaching, cooking and social area with campfire and cooking equipment, plus basic but clean composting toilets.

To keep the course fee to a minimum we do include basic food for the course, and we do include tea/coffee and other hot drinks. Participants may want to bring their own food and method of cooking it – cooking over fires is of course allowed.

All participant equipment must be carried into or out of the forest either in a rucksack or a kit bag that be loaded onto our 4wd to be driven up to the teaching area.
