A one-day introduction to navigation in the Clwydian Range AONB

Navigation is one of the most important survival skills for the U.K. Knowing how to find your way safely through our landscape can mean the difference between getting home safely and a cold night on the mountain (or worse). This course covers the basics of navigation, and is also suitable for a refresher for somebody who has previously been on a course. The course is led by an experienced instructor with a small group ratio.
The course begins with the basics of how to use a compass, then moves onto map orientation, interpretation, measuring distances and navigation strategies. It also covers some of the basics of emergency planning and safety.
The course takes place in the hills of the Clwydian Range AONB, near the market towns of Ruthin and Mold.
The course covers:
- Compass use and bearings
- Maps, grid references and contours
- Measuring distances (Timing and pacing)
- Basic route planning and emergency procedures
