EST Training Streams

EST Training Streams

Training subjects and progression within the Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework

The Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework has been created to allow candidates to progress through entry-level awards to advanced instructor certification with a clear roadmap.

The various subjects covered under the EST framework are grouped into training streams – Navigation, Work and Industry, Campcraft, Search Operations, Campcraft, Wild Food. Each stream has a number of courses, each course is a standalone training event (with course prerequisites) within a training ‘stream’ to provide a subject pathway for candidates, and allow users to choose the most relevant stream to their work.

Candidates can progress through Levels 1-3 to complete the training and other criteria to then move through the higher levels (L4-L7) become an instructor within that training stream.

Completion of courses across different training streams can be done in parallel, with progression in one stream not necessarily contingent on completion of another stream.

Navigation Training Stream

The ability to locate yourself on the globe, locate another point and navigate between the two is a fundamental human skill – but extra training is required for navigation in difficult and testing conditions, using a map and compass, integration with technology and understanding how the various systems and process work with one another.
The progression through the EST Framework Navigation Stream begins with entry-level courses in map-and-compass land navigation, use of GPS and natural navigation and develops through to advanced instructor awards.

Navigation training can be incorporated into other training streams as a combined training event.
Courses within other streams do contain some elements of basic navigation training.

Work and Industry Training Stream

Employers and industrial safety managers have never been more aware of the need to provide a safe working environment for their staff and partner organisations. Whilst the hazards of a construction site, working at height or in confined space is well understood within professional and industrial theatres the basic problems of working in cold, wet or remote conditions is often overlooked. The Work and Industry Training Stream within the EST framework is a set of courses for workers, supervisors and managers who work in remote and outdoor environments. They include environmental considerations and use of PPE, strategies for preventing hypo/hyperthermia, lost person procedures and management of teams and individuals in remote environments.

The progression through the EST Framework Work and Industry Stream begins with entry-level courses in remote-area and lone working, hypothermia and heat injury prevention and use of PPE, then develops through to advanced instructor awards.

Search Operations Training Stream

Search and Rescue encompasses a wide range of skills and disciplines – but every stage of the rescue phase relies on being able to locate the casualty and deploy resources to them. Search for missing persons in every environment (including prioritisation of search resources within confined space, urban environments and enclosed areas) has to be approached in a structured way. This begins with the deployment of train searchers, management in the field and at a tactical and strategic level.

The Search Operations training stream encompasses search field skills, management of search parties and assets in the search areas and overall management and planning of a search operation.

The progression through the EST Framework Search Operations Stream begins with entry-level courses in search field skills and basic tracking, search management and develops through to advanced instructor awards.

Search Operations training can be incorporated into other training streams as a combined training event where it is appropriate for that client – i.e. Search Operations Technician for working in remote areas where missing person procedures may have to be dealt with by the team already on the ground before 3rd party help can arrive.

Campcraft Training Stream

The Campcraft Training Stream focuses on the specifics of planning, creating and managing basecamps, intermediary and emergency camps as part of a wider operation or plan. It includes elements of bushcraft, expedition and wilderness skills and other campcraft – including emergency and unplanned camps and preparing emergency plans.

The progression through the EST Framework Campcraft Stream begins with entry-level courses in campcraft and bushcraft/wilderness skills, management of basecamps and develops through to advanced instructor awards.

Campcraft training can be incorporated into other training streams as a combined training event.

Survival Training Stream

Survival training is not about jumping headfirst from waterfalls or carrying the biggest knife in the jungle – it is about good decision-making processes, prior training, psychological preparation and equipment selection. The Survival Training Stream within the EST Framework provides terrain-specific and structured survival training for groups and individuals.

The progression through the EST Framework Survival Stream begins with entry-level courses in emergency procedures, improvisation and personal resilience and develops through to advanced instructor awards.

Navigation training can be incorporated into other training streams as a combined training event.
Courses within other streams do contain some elements of basic navigation training.
