The Intermediate Land Navigation (L2) Course from Original Outdoors is a more advanced map and compass navigation training course based in the UK. It covers similar subjects to the Basic Land Navigation course but to a more advanced level, with training and coaching relevant to the individuals on the course.
Subjects covered in classroom and exercise sessions:
- Latitude and longitude, BNG, grid references and position formats
- Map symbol and contour interpretation
- Compass use and taking bearings
- Measuring distance via timing, pacing and other methods
- Navigating away from paths and linear features
- Strategies for navigating in poor visibility
- Planning safe routes
- Preparing for emergency situations
This intermediate navigation training course is delivered by experienced and qualified instructors with military, emergency services or expedition backgrounds.

The Intermediate Land Navigation (L2) Course is delivered as a two-day course for standalone training, or can be combined with other training as a bespoke course.
The course involves a combination of classroom and field training and can be delivered on-site if required.
The course can be delivered at a maximum 1:10 ratio.
Course Dates and Bookings
This course is most often run directly for a client, either on site or at our location in North Wales. As a standalone course it takes two days to complete.

EST Course Classification
Training Level: Level Two
Terrain Level: T5 Mountainous and moorland terrain above 600m ASL, forested and densely vegetated areas above 300m ASL OR T3-T4 terrain more than 1.5 km from point of normal vehicle access
Training Streams: Navigation
Search and rescue teams, security professionals, individuals, clubs and construction companies.
This is a Level 2 EST Framework course where no previous subject experience is required.
A good level of general fitness is preferred due to the moderately active nature of parts of the course (walking in the mountains with rucksack etc)
Delegates will need to provide their own compasses (Silva Type 4 or equivalent), but all maps required for the course will be provided.
General outdoor clothing is required for the outdoor sections of the course – we can send a course-specific equipment list on request, and full information will be sent out once a booking has been confirmed.
