Assessed advanced map and compass navigation training for groups, teams and individuals as part of a structured training programme.

Course Content

The Advanced Land Navigation (L3) Course from Original Outdoors is our most advanced map and compass navigation training course. It covers advanced navigation training and is assessed.

Subjects covered in classroom and exercise sessions:

  • Use of contours and micro features as main navigation strategy
  • Navigation in poor visibility and difficult environmental conditions
  • Navigation for a group, including emergency and changed plans
  • Plotting and recording routes with GPS and digital mapping
  • Accurate distance and time measuring and prediction
  • Navigation through rocky and steep (mountaineering) terrain
  • Measuring distance via timing, pacing and other methods
  • Error detection and correction

This advanced navigation training course is delivered by experienced and qualified instructors with military, emergency services or expedition backgrounds.

Course Delivery

The Advanced Land Navigation (L3) Course is delivered as a three-day course for standalone training (with assessment), or can be combined with other training as a bespoke course.
The course involves a combination of classroom and field training and can be delivered on-site if required.
The course can be delivered at a maximum 1:10 ratio.

This course is most often run directly for a client, either on site or at our location in North Wales. As a standalone course it takes two days to complete.

Course Prerequisites

This is a Level 3 EST Framework course where significant previous subject experience is required. It is also an assessed course.

Delegates will have needed to complete both the Basic and Intermediate courses (or equivalent) before attending this course.

A good level of general fitness is preferred due to the moderately active nature of parts of the course (walking in the mountains for three days with rucksack etc)

Equipment Required

Delegates will need to provide their own compasses (Silva Type 4 or equivalent), but all maps required for the course will be provided.

General outdoor clothing is required for the outdoor sections of the course – we can send a course-specific equipment list on request, and full information will be sent out once a booking has been confirmed.
