Course Description

Level One Forest Survival Course

Two-Day Forest-environment survival courses held in North Wales

£220.00 per person

This is our 2-day Forest Survival course that requires no previous experience, but includes the same content that we deliver to our military, emergency service and business clients.

The aim of this course is to give participants the skills of basic survival in a forest environment, all delivered in a realistic environment and learning with experienced instructors.
The full course content is detailed below, and covers the basics of shelters, firelighting, cutting tools, hunting and foraging and – most importantly – the decisions you need to make in a survival situation.

The course starts at 9:00am on Day 1 and normally run through until about 4:00pm on Day 2.

Why should you choose Original Outdoors for a survival course?

Survival skills are a subject that are often misrepresented – and the term ‘survival course’ gets used to advertise everything from kids activity days to what is essentially just camping without showers…

Original Outdoors runs survival courses for clients of all types, from military and emergency services to companies and private groups . The dates listed here are for the limited number of public courses we run every year as part of the structured training of the EST Framework.

The Level One Forest Survival course is the first rung on a progression of structured survival training courses that are not just an activity day on the edge of some parkland – these are real courses, run by experienced instructors from a variety of backgrounds. This is the same course as we deliver to clients from around the UK and overseas.

  • Emergency and improvised shelters using natural and synthetic materials
  • Firelighting using a variety of techniques
  • Water filtration and purification
  • Simple cordage and knots
  • Prevention and treatment of hypothermia and other environmental hazards
  • Safe use of simple cutting tools
  • Equipment choice and use
  • Signalling for help and preparing for rescue
  • Emergency techniques

These dates for the L1 Forest Survival Course from Original Outdoors takes place in the Clwydian Range AONB just north of the beautiful market town of Ruthin. The course venue is a mixed woodland on the edge of an ancient limestone gorge.

Full joining instructions, equipment list and meeting point will be sent out by email after you book a place on the course.

Do I need any prior experience?

As a Level 1 course on the EST Framework no previous experience is required, however please read the notes below about fitness.

How fit do I need to be?

You will need to be fit enough to be on your feet all day and to move over slightly rough terrain. The aim of this course is to train you, not to test you too much or put you at unreasonable risk. The vast majority of fit adults will be able to complete this course with no problem – but if you have any questions please get in touch directly.

Is there an age limit on this course?

All participants must be a minimum of 16yrs of age at the beginning of the course, and anyone under the age of 18yrs must be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian.

What is the EST Framework?

The Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework was created by Original Outdoors to provide a structured training pathway for organisations, groups and individuals who work and visit remote places and hazardous outdoor environments. The L1 Forest Survival Course is part of this framework, and all participants on this course will be given the option to continue on this training stream – but if you just want to attend this course then that is absolutely fine.

Do I need to provide equipment?

Participants will need to provide some basic outdoor equipment for the course (including waterproof clothing, sleeping bag etc). We will also provide some equipment, and each participant will receive a Hultafors knife at the beginning of the course that they can take home with them at the end. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to have a nominated person attend with them to receive the knife on their behalf.

What about food?

We will provide food for the duration of the course, some of which you will have to prepare yourselves and some will be prepared as a group. No previous cooking experience is required though!
