Course Description

Coastal Foraging Walk

Short beach foraging courses held in North Wales

£30.00 per person

Original Outdoors runs coastal and beach foraging walks throughout the year. Each course follows a walk through woodlands down to a beach where we will explore the best edible plants, seaweeds and shellfish that the are has to offer.

The walks are roughly two hours in length, meeting at the beautiful seaside village of Borth y Gest (near Porthmadog) and are led by an experienced and professional forager. No previous experience is required other than being willing to explore beaches, rockpools and the inlets of this stunning part of the North Wales coast.

The walks are timed to coincide with low tide, and the start times are listed next to the dates above.

Course Content

  • Identification and use of the plants to be found in that area at that time of year
  • How to access and gather wild food legally and ethically
  • How to use guidebooks properly

  • Gathering protein – fish, shellfish and other sources
  • Beach-casting and simple fishing

Course Location

The Coastal Foraging Walk takes place near the village of Borth y Gest, just outside Porthmadog on the North Wales coast.

Do I need any special equipment?

As a minimum we ask people to bring outdoor clothing for a day of walking on an exposed beach, so a waterproof coat, warm layers and hat/gloves for the winter courses. Your feet will stay dry but if you want to explore some of the rockpools or the water’s edge then you may want to bring wellies or neoprene boots.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes – but it will have to be on a lead at all times and be well behaved. You are responsible for your own dog at all times.

Is there any cooking involved?

There is no cooking involved on this course, but we do run a dedicated Wild Food Weekend that covers many aspects of cooking with wild food in the outdoors.
