About Original Outdoors

Original Outdoors  is an established outdoor skills training provider. We are based in North Wales, UK, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park.

We started off working in the mountains and forests of the UK – but moved out into the wider outdoor world and now offer skills training, commentary and content experiences for a wide range of audiences.

A history of doing things differently.

Original Outdoors was established back in 2003, originally as the trading name of Richard Prideaux for his work as a freelance instructor and mountain leader.

Richard worked across the UK – and overseas – on everything from mountain challenges and training through to expedition safety and working behind the scenes in film and TV.

The brand truly came into its own in around 2010 when we started offering our own courses directly to the public. This started off with simple hillwalking and navigation courses – but soon included foraging, modern bushcraft, outdoor safety, tracking and other essential outdoor skills.

Based in North Wales and working across the UK, we developed new ways of delivering that skills training and experiences for every outdoor sector. This evolved into delivery directly to the military, emergency services, SAR and businesses via our partner brand Outdoor Professional.

The disruption of COVID-19 (and particularly the UK lockdowns) brought us the opportunity to evolve further. Early in that period we started offering more of our content in different formats – particularly podcasts and videos. In 2021 we launched the popular Modern Outdoor Survival podcast, regularly appearing in the UK top 40 charts for our categories and with guests from around the world.

That global audience now includes members of our free online community and loyal followers of our gear reviews and skills articles.

In 2023 we launched the Original Outdoors Academy – a hybrid approach to learning both traditional outdoor skills  and skills that are essential to everyday life.
